Tom Wood was founded in Norway in 2013 by Mona Jensen, and is today internationally recognised for innovative and responsible jewellery design. With a conscious approach to materials, design and production, our collections are carried by leading retailers worldwide.Our headquarter is based in Oslo, with a team of approximately 50 people, alongside colleagues in Japan, Spain and Denmark. 

Following the successful opening of our first flagship in Aoyama (2023) and our location at Dover Street Market Ginza (2024), we are proud to announce the opening of our third store in Japan, located in the vibrant heart of Shibuya, scheduled for opening spring 2026. This opening represents a unique opportunity to take part in shaping Tom Wood’s next retail chapter in Japan.

About the role

The Goldsmith Specialist  will be responsible for operating the in-store jewellery lab at Tom Wood’s Shibuya Flagship Store in Tokyo, Japan, with close support from our experienced master goldsmith and development team. This is a unique role within the Japanese retail landscape, combining hands-on craftsmanship with customer engagement in a live retail environment.

The role will focus on carrying out jewellery services such as engraving, polishing, resizing, welding, plating, repairs (e.g chains), and stone setting. While taking ownership of the lab’s operation, the Goldsmith will be supported in developing skills, refining techniques, and building confidence over time through collaboration and guidance.

The position also plays an important role in making Tom Wood’s craftsmanship visible and accessible to customers. By contributing to a transparent, customer-facing workshop experience, the role supports our Responsibility storytelling and highlights the value of craftsmanship within the store. All work will be carried out in line with Tom Wood’s quality standards and Japanese health and safety regulations.

The role reports to the Head of Retail Operations, and the primary place of work will be Tom Wood’s Shibuya Flagship Store.

刻印、研磨、サイズ直し、溶接、メッキ、修理（チェーン修理など）、石留めといったジュエリー加工・サービス業務を中心に、ラボの運営に主体的に関わっていただきます。運営に責任を持ちながらも、チームと連携し、段階的に技術力や理解を深めていける環境です。

また、店内でのクラフト作業を通じて、トムウッドのクラフトマンシップをお客様に直接伝える重要な役割も担います。透明性のある、顧客に開かれたラボ体験を通じて、トムウッドのResponsibility（責任あるものづくり）のストーリーを支えます。すべての業務は、日本の安全衛生基準およびトムウッドの品質基準に基づいて行われます。

本ポジションはリテールオペレーション責任者（Head of Retail Operations）にレポートし、主な勤務地は渋谷フラッグシップストアとなります。

Craftsmanship & Technical Excellence

• Perform engraving, polishing, resizing, soldering, welding, and rhodium plating of Tom Wood jewellery pieces with precision and consistency, with training and ongoing support from our development team.

• Carry out repairs, chain fixes, and stone setting using tools such as micro welders, torches, and microscopes, developing technical skills through hands-on guidance and practice.

• Operate and maintain lab machinery including polishing motors, ultrasonic cleaners, plating baths, extraction systems, and laser engravers, with onboarding and training provided.

• Calibrate and care for all equipment, ensuring safe and optimal function, in line with established procedures and training.

• Follow Tom Wood’s craftsmanship and sustainability standards to enhance product longevity, while deepening understanding of best practices through collaboration with the development team.

• Collaborate with off-site workshops for more advanced processes (such as casting, soldering, or chemical treatments) when needed, with support in coordination and technical evaluation.

• Tom Woodのジュエリーに対し、彫刻、研磨、サイズ調整、はんだ付け、溶接、ロジウムメッキを、開発チームからのトレーニングおよび継続的なサポートを受けながら、高い精度と安定性をもって行います。

• マイクロウェルダー、バーナー、顕微鏡などを使用し、修理、チェーン修復、石留めなどを実施し、実務を通じて技術力を段階的に向上させていきます。

• 研磨機、超音波洗浄機、メッキ槽、排気システム、レーザー刻印機などの設備を操作・管理し、導入時のトレーニングを受けながら習熟していきます。

• 設備のキャリブレーションおよびメンテナンスを行い、安全かつ最適な状態を維持します（手順・指導あり）。

• Tom Woodのクラフトマンシップおよびサステナビリティ基準に従い、製品の寿命を延ばすと同時に、開発チームとの協力を通じてベストプラクティスへの理解を深めます。

• 必要に応じて、より高度な工程（鋳造、はんだ付け、化学処理など）について外部のワークショップと連携し、調整や技術評価のサポートを行います。

Customer Engagement & Storytelling

• Demonstrate craftsmanship processes to customers during in-store sessions or private appointments.

• Translate technical craft into clear, engaging storytelling aligned with Tom Wood’s values of craft, innovation and sustainability.

• Educate retail staff on craftsmanship basics so they can enhance customer interactions and perform basic services as for example engraving. .

• Participate in marketing/PR initiatives, including photoshoots, video content and events showcasing craftsmanship when relevant.

カスタマーエンゲージメント & ストーリーテリング

• 店舗内セッションやプライベートアポイントメントで、お客様に制作工程を紹介

• 技術的な工程を、Tom Woodの価値観（クラフト、イノベーション、サステナビリティ）に沿った形でわかりやすく伝える

• リテールスタッフにクラフトの基礎知識を共有し、接客や簡単な作業（例：彫刻）をサポートできるよう教育

• 必要に応じて撮影、ビデオ、イベントなどのPR活動に参加し、クラフトマンシップを発信

Responsibility & Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with Tokyo fire, ventilation, waste, and chemical handling regulations.

• Maintain and document safety procedures, PPE use, and secure chemical storage.

• Collect, recycle and report on waste metal and dust to support Tom Wood’s Retail Responsibility Calculator and transparency commitments.

• Work closely with the Store Manager to ensure Lab activities integrate seamlessly with retail operations.

• Liaise with building and safety officers to ensure ongoing compliance of all lab activities.

Cross-Department Contribution

• Provide input to the Store Manager and other relevant stakeholders on craftsmanship challenges or innovations.

• Support Tom Wood’s Brand department with expertise for campaigns highlighting craftsmanship and sustainability.

• Partner with Logistics for responsible waste management and material recycling.

Who we are looking for

• 1–3 years of experience, or relevant education/apprenticeship, as a bench jeweller, engraver, or fine jewellery artisan.

• A solid foundation in jewellery techniques such as engraving, soldering, polishing, rhodium plating, and stone setting, with the motivation to further develop these skills.

• Basic understanding of safety practices and compliance in jewellery workshops; experience within Tokyo or Japan is a plus but not required.

• Interest in precious metals, stones, and responsible sourcing practices, with a willingness to deepen knowledge over time.

• An interest in customer interaction; experience with workshops, live demonstrations, or teaching is welcomed but not essential.

• ジュエリー職人、彫金師、またはファインジュエリー分野において、1〜3年程度の実務経験、または関連する教育・見習い経験をお持ちの方。

• 彫刻、はんだ付け、研磨、ロジウムメッキ、石留めなどの基礎的な技術を理解しており、さらに技術を高めていく意欲のある方。

• ジュエリー工房における安全管理や法令遵守についての基礎的な知識をお持ちの方（東京エリアや日本での経験があれば尚可ですが必須ではありません）。

• 貴金属や宝石、責任ある素材調達に関心があり、知識を深めていく姿勢をお持ちの方。

• お客様とのコミュニケーションに興味がある方（ワークショップ、デモンストレーション、指導経験があれば歓迎しますが、必須ではありません）。
